Resolution: Day 2

Word Count: 12,009

Summary of Events:
Georgiana worried about the not-too-pleased expressions she'd seen on Shelton's parents' faces after the engagement had been announced all the way home from the party, but voiced her concerns to no one. Shelton and his parents discussed the matter, although their discussion devolved into a set-to between him and his father when he realised his parents believed Georgiana too poor for him. After church the next day Georgiana felt so overwhelmed by wedding suggestions, on top of being worried about the night before that she went up to her room to cry; her mother came after her and they discussed all her worries . . .

Excerpt of the Day:
“They looked too upset for it to be a minor issue,” Georgiana replied. “They looked like they hated me.”
“Let’s hope that they don’t,” Mother said. “Hating isn’t a terribly nice thing to do, seeing as you might as well be wishing the person you hate to be dead according to Jesus.”
Georgiana dabbed at her eyes and nose with the handkerchief again.
“Don’t worry dear,” Mother said. “I’m sure they’ll come around and see how nice and lovely a young woman you are. I’m sure if they would just get to know you some more — which they’ll assuredly be doing within the next year — they’d realise that you’re just as fine a young woman and worthy of their son’s hand in marriage as any other girl they might’ve initially considered better than you.”
“I’ve visited them more than a few times over the years,” Georgiana said. “Surely seeing more of them will only solidify their contempt toward me.”
Mother sighed. “We don’t even know what it is that prompted their reactions yesterday darling, there’s really no use in speculating. You’ll have to wait until you see Shelton again here soon so that you can find out what prompted his parent’s reaction.”
“I don’t want to know how long it would take for me to find someone else,” Georgiana said.
“I doubt Shelton would be inclined to break off the relationship that easily,” Mother said. “Don’t you remember how he talked about his parents’ desire for him to become a lawyer? He certainly didn’t seem the type who would immediately do what his parents told him, which isn’t usually something to be taken as an admirable characteristic, but it does show that he is not a spineless man, and that is a good thing.”
“I don’t want to cause him trouble, though,” Georgiana said.
“That is definitely admirable of you, my dear,” Mother said. “But if he is willing to suffer because he loves you there is no good reason to argue against him. It is a proof that his love for you already has a solid foundation that is likely to last for a very good many years.”
Georgiana sighed. She didn’t like being the cause for anyone’s unhappiness or trouble, and she most certainly didn’t want to cause anyone’s disownment.
“It’s alright Georgia,” Mother said softly. “Come join us downstairs. Worrying won’t add a year to your life. You might as well set the issue aside until you can meet with Shelton, then you can find out the reasons behind it all and act based on that.”
Reluctantly Georgiana nodded. She dearly wanted to talk to Shelton now, but she didn’t dare walk all the way to the Keith house, she would be better served to just wait for Shelton to come by, which she definitely hoped he wouldn’t delay doing.
