Dallas nodded and they headed into the church, where Blake was waiting for them in the little room at the back of the sanctuary where they were to wait until Mrs. Bradford was seated by Petra’s second-oldest brother — as her oldest was married — then they would come out and stand at the front, with Dallas and Blake escorting their respective bridesmaids to their places before Petra entered and was given to Landon.
Having not yet seen the bridesmaids’ dresses or hairstyles, Dallas had no idea what the bridesmaid he was escorting was going to look like, but because she’d looked rather appealing in the close-fitting jeans and t-shirt she’d been wearing at the rehearsal yesterday, he had high hopes she was going to look good.
The second and minute hand of the clock in the room were both pointed squarely at the top at the chosen hour when Dallas saw the pastor shift before he quietly motioned for Landon, Blake, and Dallas to follow him.
They stood to the right side of the sanctuary, lined up and facing the front, with Dallas furthest from the aisle. In moments the music commenced and Dallas looked to the pastor for a visual cue.
He knew where in the song the bridesmaid had reached the end during the rehearsal, but the pastor had also nodded subtly to him and to Blake during the rehearsal just to confirm, and once he saw that nod he turned and went over to the bridesmaid, whom he was stunned to see looking quite lovely in an empire-waisted knee-length dress that was emerald green at the top and faded in ombre to golden yellow at the bottom.
Giving her his arm, he escorted her up and to the left-hand side of the stage before taking his place on the right and seeing that the second bridesmaid was similarly attired. It was clearly a nod to the fact that Petra was from Saskatchewan — having met Landon when he’d been doing his six months of in-the-field training at Prince Albert — while Landon was from Alberta — which Dallas guessed was represented by the little blue flowers paired with the yellow roses in the bridesmaids’ bouquets.
Everyone rose with the pastor’s gesture and Dallas looked down at Landon to see him looking anxiously up at them, then Dallas’ gaze went up to where Petra, resplendent in a white dress with a mermaid silhouette, was making her way down the aisle. It was a phenomenal dress that made Dallas feel a little jealous of Landon for getting Petra, but, at the same time, he had to admit that his bridesmaid was pretty attractive, although he could easily imagine her looking better in a dress like Petra’s.
Once Petra had been given away Landon escorted her up onto the platform and the ceremony began, with Dallas making many and regular glances toward the bridesmaid across from him, wondering if she would be keen on spending more time with him than her duty as bridesmaid dictated, as the more he looked at her, the more he liked the idea.
